Showa University has announced Showa Hanako 2, arobot dental patient fabricated by robot maker Tmsuk. Compared with its predecessor Showa Hanako 1, this robot is designed to be more realistic, functional, and easier to use. Showa Hanako 2 will actually be sold by the dental supply company The Yoshida Dental Manufacturing.

The main features of the new robot are a silicone skin and mouth lining by Orient Industry, a maker of love dolls. The tongue and arms each have two degrees of freedom, and the robot overall has ten, enabling it to make natural movements, like shaking its head and choking.

"We've been in contact with Orient Industry for over a decade, since before we produced Hanako 1. Even then, we thought we'd need professionals to help with the molding. If you don't try to make a robot's face look realistic, it doesn't have the same effect on users psychologically. How doctors and students actually feel in the presence of a patient is a really big factor. It makes quite a difference if students can train while experiencing the same kind of tension they'd feel about a human patient - thinking, for example, "I'm really going to make this treatment work," or "Even the smallest mistake would be unforgivable." We think it's OK for people to be tense while training, and to make mistakes, because, well, this is a robot."

Showa Hanako 2 has several major improvements. The skin has been changed from PVC to silicone, and the tongue and cheek linings have been formed in one piece. And the head, which previously moved only pneumatically, now has a motor.

"We considered the motions of the tongue and mouth lining separately. To prevent water getting into the machinery and causing problems, we wanted to form those parts in one piece if possible. But the molding technology for doing that wasn't available to us. Orient Industry had that technology, and it helped us a lot."

Among the robot's autonomous actions, it can blink, roll its eyes, sneeze, shake its head, cough, move its tongue, and get tired of keeping its mouth open. In addition, the robot now has a conversation capability, using speech recognition technology from Raytron.

"People choke if you put your fingers down their throat, which is called the gag reflex. We've reproduced that reflex. Students are taught about this from textbooks, but it's hard to teach them what actually happens. So we've built a choking capability into this robot."

"Even when we first produced Showa Hanako, we were asked to sell it in four or five countries. But the problem was how we could keep offering maintenance, which is Tmsuk's job, if the robot came into widespread use. However, we thought that Showa Hanako should be sold through coordination among the government and organizations involved, as a technology from Japan, rather than from an individual university or company. Regarding actual feature development, speech recognition has gone very well, even better than we expected. We've found that the robot can recognize a variety of words, and accumulate a vocabulary. This will be really helpful when we do data mining from medical histories and patient databases. So we have the feeling that a new industry will be born in the medical field."

'amenbo' replaces a traditional mouse with a system capable of obtaining movement and pressure information about all five fingers


'amenbo', a new input device by japan-based company double research and development, measures the movements and pressure of individual fingers, opening a range of expanded computing possibilities.

kazumasa ueno, head of the company's control systems group, notes that 'amenbo' differs from kinect and other 3D image recognition systems in its ability to sense finger pressure. one sensor is located in each of the five panels, so unlike a touchscreen, the device recognizes each finger as being part of a single hand, and can track movement information even when individual fingers are lifted off the surface.

the most immediate application for the 'amenbo' technology is in manipulating 3D models and CAD data.
occasionally CAD work requires the use of a 3D mouse and ordinary mouse at the same time, but 'amenbo' packages both of these functions into a single device, controllable with one hand.

ueno also suggests that the company may use the technology in their robotics production: 'our company is making a robot hand with five fingers. if you assigned this to each finger and moved them,
you could operate the robot hand. these days most robots operate with two or three fingers, but we think that with this it would be simple to have fine control of many flexible fingers.

new york based studios softlab and tietz-baccon have collaborated to create a custom retail display for accessories company nooka, called 'COstruction' and located in DDCLAB’s meatpacking district store. interpreting nooka's theme of organic and crystalline growth, softlab developed a program to automate the arrangement of cubes within constrained dimensions, based on certain organizational characteristics such as height, scale, density, and proximity.
the resulting installation was fabricated by tietz-baccon after testing configurations of the suggested computations.

accommodating many display options over time, the jutting formation creates a redundancy of flat surfaces: products can be arranged at different heights and permutations without moving the individual cubes around. suggesting a rock formation that has eroded, the striated cubes are made with stacked sheets of plywood and a layer of felt is sandwiched between each, providing a finished surface to display the product.

a silver-inked rollerball pen lets users draw electrical circuits by hand directly onto paper, wood, and other surfaces, opening up a range of possible options for flexible and disposable electronics and electronic media art. the research team behind the prototype device was led by engineers jennifer lewis and jennifer bernhard, both of the college of engineering of the university of illinois.

the ink of the pen is composed of silver, which after drying maintains its conductivity even through multiple bends and folds of paper. the researchers now plan to expand the palette of inks to enable pen-on-paper writing of other conductive materials.

metallic inks are frequently used in printers for the fabrication of electronic devices, but the handheld pen lowers the cost, learning curve, portability, and rapidity of the approach. in the past, conductive silver pens have been used for repairing circuitry, but the new pen marks the first design intended to actually create durable conductive wiring.

'pic3D' plastic films can be placed on any LCD monitor to create a glasses-free 3D display


at japan's recent 3D and virtual reality expo, global wave demoed its series of 'pic3D' film covers for phone and monitor screens, capable of converting any LCD display into a glasses-free 3D set.

'pic3D' sheets make use of a lenticular lens system instead of the parallax barrier found in most 3D films, a change in technology that is purported to offer light transmission levels of 90% and a 120° field of view.
the product works with a downloadable software application that converts side-by-side imaging to stereoscopic views, which appear 3D when seen through the 'pic3D' sheets. the application also permits users to input video URLs from sites like youtube in order to watch 3D-like content.

sheets are currently made in 12.1-inch (1280x800p), 15.6-inch (1366x768p), 21.5-inch (1920x1080p), 23-inch (1920x1080p), and to fit iPhone4 and iPod touch and iPad 2, ranging in price from 2000 yen
(about 25 USD) for the iPhone cover to 15,000 yen (about 185 USD) for the 23-inch sheet.

Samsung Announced yesterday that it has launches a new series of Super Fast Class 10 32GB MicroSD Cards for fourth generation Smartphones. Incorporating 3-Bit NAND Flash, these MicroSD Cards offers a 12MB/s writing speed and 24MB/s maximum reading speed. While there are not exact date available on these cards will be available on the market and at what cost, Samsung however announced that they will launch a 64GB version of these microSD cards as early as next year.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced production of its high-performance micro Secure Digital (microSD) cards with advanced data transfer speeds that support the performance requirements on fourth generation (4G) smartphones. The new 20-nanometer-class* microSD cards have a class 10 speed rating suitable for seamless data storage and transmission of full HD video, one of the features becoming highly popular among 4G smartphone users.

“The industry demand for high-class-rated memory cards addresses the growing performance push for next generation mobile applications in more advanced smartphones including 4G models,” said Wanhoon Hong, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics. ”As the industry adopts microSD cards with a class 10 rating, the superior data transfer speeds are expected to improve the mobile user experience tremendously.”

The new 32GB microSD cards can write at 12 megabytes per second (MB/s) and read at 24MB/s, providing users with more than double the maximum write speeds of a class 4 rated 32GB microSD card. The new 32GB memory card incorporates 32Gb 3-bit NAND flash memory chips and a proprietary 3-bit NAND controller to deliver the high performance.

The new card follows the introduction of Samsung’s 30 nanometer (nm) class*, 32 gigabit (Gb) 3-bit-per-cell (3-bit) NAND-based 32 gigabyte (GB) microSD cards in February 2010. By applying the finer 20-nm-class process technology, the productivity of the chips is raised over 30 percent.

As an industry pioneer, Samsung plans to continue to aggressively introduce new NAND-based mobile memory solutions for timely market adoption. Mass production of its 20nm-class 64Gb 3-bit NAND designed on advanced toggle NAND architecture is anticipated for early next year.

LG announced this morning a new Vacuum Robot with the VR6172LVM. Beside the usual and basic autonomous vacuuming thingy and low noise design (48dB) this Vacuum Robot comes with a new Self Voice Over Diagnostic features called “Smart Diagnostic”.
By pressing the “Smart Diagnostic” button for at least 3sec, the VR6172LVM will make a 30 second or 50cm round trip and self diagnose itself by checking up to 14 different kinds of component and will automatically announces you what wrong it and what you have to fix.
The VR6172LVM will be put on the market shortly at around 779,000 Won
